Named after the rare Paraiba Tourmaline gemstone, these stunning angelfish display metallic patches of blue, and occasionally gold, copper, or silver, over a white blushing body. Young fish may appear plain with only hints of color, but patience is rewarded as mature adults develop into truly breathtaking fish unlike any other angelfish variety.

Description

A Gemstone Brought to Life

Our Paraiba Angelfish take their name from the rare Paraiba Tourmaline gemstone, renowned for its deep neon electric blue color, and the comparison is fitting. Paraiba Angelfish display stunning metallic patches that are typically a vivid blue, though gold, copper, and silver tones can also appear. These patches develop across the body and can extend into the bases of the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins as well as the facial areas, creating a pattern that is completely unique to each individual fish. No two Paraibas are identical.

A Fish That Rewards Patience We will be honest with you — young Paraiba Angelfish can look underwhelming. Juveniles often display only small hints of color on an otherwise plain body, and it can be difficult to imagine what they will become. But patience is genuinely rewarded with this variety. As these fish mature their metallic patches develop, expand, and intensify, and a fully mature adult Paraiba is one of the most visually stunning freshwater fish available in the hobby.

Genetics Paraiba Angelfish carry a double dose of both the Stripeless gene and the Philippine Blue gene, expressed genetically as S/S pb/pb. The double dose of Stripeless produces the characteristic blushing phenotype, while the double dose of Philippine Blue drives the metallic patch expression that defines the Paraiba. Additional genes can be layered onto the Paraiba base to produce related varieties. Adding a Dark gene for example produces the highly sought after Pinoy Paraiba, a stunning combination that is considerably rarer and more difficult to produce consistently.

Fin Types Available in both Standard and Veil fin types when in stock.

Angelfish Care Guide and Other Information

Scientific NamePterophyllum scalare
TemperamentSemi-Aggressive. Angelfish can make good community fish; however, due to their semi-aggressive nature, they need to be closely monitored...and deal with if they become too aggressive. For this reason we do not recommend angelfish for beginners.
Lifespan10-15 years with proper care.
Adult SizeThe central body will reach a large dollar coin, approx 3-4 inches in diameter, excluding the fins. Depending on the fin type on how big their overall size can become. Also, angelfish will continue to slowly grow and bulk up as they age.
General Hardness8 dGH or 100 TDS. Angelfish do best in soft water, but can easily adapt to hard water. If mineralization is too high eggs may not hatch. When this happens may need to consider alternate methods if wanting to breed.
Tank Size20 Gallon High for the first angelfish; and an additional 10 gallons for each additional angel.
Group SizeAngelfish can be kept in singles or in groups. While juveniles, they do best in groups. But once they mature, they may begin to fight for territory and for their mate. To minimize squabbles, do not house 3 together as the dominant two will pick on and potentially kill the submissive one.
HabitatFreshwater
Dietary NeedsOmnivore. Angelfish need extra protein and plant sources for optimum health. Options include:
  • Gourmet Cichlid Flake or Tropical Color Flake
  • Artemia Flake - especially when raising red or deep orange varieties
  • Newly hatched Baby Brine Shrimp Eggs (BBS)
  • Golden Pearls - great alternative to hatching BBS. A great alternative to hatching BBS.
  • Sticks - any flavor. Popular options include Beefheart Sticks, Bloodworm Sticks, Silkworm Sticks, Spirulina Sticks, Very Veggie Sticks, and much more.
  • Organic Granules
  • Repashy
  • Even fresh veggies and occasional fruits. But be aware, fresh foods can quickly pollute the tank. I like to use fresh foods 1-2 days before doing water changes or maintenance to clean up
BreedingAngels can learn to parent raise their offspring if housed in their own tank 29 gallons or larger; or can pull the eggs and hatch artificially.

The pictures they use on their website don’t even begin to do these fish justice! I have my planted tank with a west-facing window in front of it. The colors the natural sunlight show are incredible!
