The Only Gel Food Made for Wood Eating Fish
Repashy Morning Wood is one of the only commercially available foods specifically formulated for xylivorous fish, those that consume wood fibers as a natural part of their diet. In the wild, many pleco species including Panaque and Panaqolus rasp on driftwood not just for algae but to extract nutrients and indigestible fiber that is essential for their digestive health. Morning Wood replicates this by using wood cellulose as its primary ingredient combined with triple the gelling agents of standard Repashy formulas, creating a super firm and long lasting gel that fish can rasp on naturally.
Who Are They For? Morning Wood is essential for true wood eating pleco species including Panaque and Panaqolus, and highly beneficial for other Loricariid catfish including Ancistrus bristlenose plecos and many other pleco varieties that naturally graze on driftwood. The high fiber, low protein formula also makes it an excellent food for aquatic snails and a great supplemental food for other herbivorous bottom dwelling species. When prepared at the standard ratio or firmer, the gel also works well as a weekend or vacation feeder for community tanks where daily feeding is not possible.
A Note for Bristlenose Keepers Morning Wood can bring out surprisingly territorial behavior in bristlenose plecos, who may spend more time chasing tank mates away from the food than actually eating it. Consider placing multiple pieces in different areas of the tank to reduce competition and ensure all fish get their fair share.
A Useful Tip for Snail Keepers When prepared at the standard ratio or firmer, the gel holds together well enough to make an excellent bait for attracting pest snails to a single location in the aquarium where they can easily be found and removed. Simply place a piece of gel in a corner of the tank overnight and collect the snails that gather around it.
Two Ways to Serve
As a Gel: The standard preparation method. Mix powder with water, allow to set, then cut into cubes, shred, or serve as a whole slab for fish to rasp on. When prepared at the standard ratio or firmer the texture holds up well even under sustained rasping. Treat the finished gel as fresh food and store sealed in the refrigerator for up to two weeks or in the freezer for up to six months.
As a Jerky: Prepare the gel as normal, pour into a deep container, slice into quarter inch thick pieces, and dry completely in an oven or dehydrator at 150 degrees F for 8 to 12 hours. An even firmer texture option ideal for the most dedicated wood raspers.
Feeding Fry Morning Wood can also be offered to fry by sprinkling a small pinch of dry powder directly across the water surface. Start with a very small amount and adjust based on consumption.
How to Prepare the Gel Ratio is one part powder to three parts water, using 1/4 cup powder to 3/4 cup water as a starting point. Adjust water quantity to achieve your preferred firmness.
Microwave method: Measure water into a heat safe container. Heat until water begins to boil. Add powder and mix well. Let sit at room temperature until gelled, approximately 2 hours.
Stovetop method: Bring water to a boil in a pot. Remove from heat. Add powder and mix well. Immediately pour into a storage container or mold and let sit at room temperature until firm.
Storage Store unused powder at room temperature in a cool dry location away from moisture. Refrigerate any prepared gel and use within two weeks, or freeze for up to six months.
