What Is Aufwuchs and Why Does It Matter?
Aufwuchs is a German word describing the layer of algae, diatoms, microorganisms, insect larvae, crustaceans, rotifers, and tiny invertebrates that forms naturally on the surface of rocks, driftwood, and other hard substrates in rivers and streams. For many popular aquarium species this biofilm layer is not just a food source but their primary diet in the wild. Repashy Soilent Green is specifically formulated to replicate this natural aufwuchs diet, combining algae as the primary ingredient with high quality aquatic animal proteins to deliver the complete nutritional profile these specialized feeders need.
How Is Soilent Green Different From Super Green? Both formulas are algae rich but serve different fish. Super Green is a fully vegan formula for obligate herbivores that require no animal protein. Soilent Green contains aquatic animal proteins alongside the algae, making it the better choice for species that naturally consume both algae and small organisms in the wild. Mbuna cichlids, plecos, and Otocinclus for example rasp algae covered surfaces not just for the algae itself but for the small meaty organisms living within it. Soilent Green delivers both.
Who Are They For? Soilent Green is an excellent staple food for African cichlids including Mbuna, plecos, Otocinclus, hillstream loaches, gobies, nerite snails, shrimp, crabs, and crayfish. It works equally well in freshwater and saltwater aquariums. Reptiles and amphibians that consume algae and small organisms will also benefit from this formula.
A Creative Feeding Tip Try spreading the liquid gel over a piece of driftwood or a flat rock before it sets, then place it in the aquarium once fully firm. This encourages natural grazing behavior as fish rasp and pick at the food just as they would in the wild.
Two Ways to Serve
As a Gel: The standard preparation method. Mix powder with water, allow to set, then cut into cubes, shred, or serve as a whole slab. Treat the finished gel as fresh food and store sealed in the refrigerator for up to two weeks or in the freezer for up to six months.
As a Jerky: Prepare the gel as normal, pour into a deep container, slice into quarter inch thick pieces, and dry completely in an oven or dehydrator at 150 degrees F for 8 to 12 hours.
How to Prepare the Gel Ratio is one part powder to three parts water, using 1/4 cup powder to 3/4 cup water as a starting point. Adjust water quantity to achieve your preferred firmness.
Microwave method: Measure water into a heat safe container. Heat until water begins to boil. Add powder and mix well. Let sit at room temperature until gelled, approximately 2 hours.
Stovetop method: Bring water to a boil in a pot. Remove from heat. Add powder and mix well. Immediately pour into a storage container or mold and let sit at room temperature until firm.
Storage Store unused powder at room temperature in a cool dry location away from moisture. Refrigerate any prepared gel and use within two weeks, or freeze for up to six months.
Guaranteed Analysis: Crude Protein 40% min, Crude Fat 8% min, Crude Fiber 8% max, Moisture 8% max, Ash 12% max
