Jackfruit Leaves

1 review

Price range: $8.00 through $114.00

A longer lasting botanical leaf that releases tannins gently and gradually, making it an excellent choice for more sensitive setups. Whole leaves or strips provide biofilm grazing surfaces for shrimp, snails, and fry, while the iron rich leaf material offers nutritional value as it decomposes. Mix with other botanicals to create a natural leaf litter environment.

Description

A Gentle and Long Lasting Botanical for Blackwater and Shrimp Setups

Our Jackfruit Leaves are sourced from Artocarpus heterophyllus plants grown on a farm in Borneo, hand picked, cleaned, and organically processed and dried. One of the most popular botanical leaves in the hobby, Jackfruit Leaves are prized for their gentle tannin release and exceptional longevity in the aquarium — lasting significantly longer than many competing botanicals including Indian Almond Leaves and Guava Leaves. They have been used by fish keepers in India for generations to impart tannins into aquarium water and have become increasingly popular worldwide for blackwater, shrimp, and biotope aquarium setups.

What Makes Jackfruit Leaves Unique Unlike some botanicals that release tannins quickly and decompose rapidly, Jackfruit Leaves work gradually and can remain structurally intact for a month or more before fully softening. This slow release makes them particularly suitable for more sensitive setups where dramatic water parameter swings are a concern. As they eventually break down they leave behind a beautifully detailed leaf skeleton, adding a unique aesthetic element to the aquarium. The leaves are also rich in iron, which is beneficial for shrimp, and contain phytonutrients including lignans, isoflavones, and saponins that are thought to have broad spectrum antibacterial properties.

The Benefits of Jackfruit Leaves

Blackwater Conditioning: As the leaves decompose they gradually release tannins that soften water, gently lower pH, and create the characteristic amber tint of natural blackwater environments. The gentle release rate makes dosage easy to control. Start with one or two leaves per 10 gallons and adjust based on your water parameters and desired effect.

Biofilm and Foraging: As the leaves soften they develop a rich coating of biofilm and beneficial microorganisms that shrimp, snails, fry, and small fish graze on naturally. This is one of the most valuable aspects of Jackfruit Leaves for shrimp keepers, replicating natural foraging behavior and providing genuine nutritional value as the leaves decompose.

Antibacterial Properties: The phytonutrients in Jackfruit Leaves are thought to exhibit broad spectrum antibacterial activity, supporting fish and invertebrate health and helping reduce pathogen levels in the water. While scientific studies specifically on aquarium use are limited, the leaves have a long history of use in traditional medicine for wound healing and antibacterial applications.

Spawning Stimulation: The tannins and organic compounds released help recreate the natural water conditions that trigger spawning behavior in many species including livebearers, bettas, killifish, and dwarf cichlids.

Shelter and Cover: Whole leaves provide natural shelter and hiding places for fry, small fish, shrimp, and invertebrates, reducing stress and supporting natural behavior.

How to Use Add leaves directly to the aquarium whole, or break into smaller pieces for a more natural leaf litter effect. Leaves will gradually soften and release tannins over several weeks. Allow leaves to fully decompose or replace with fresh leaves periodically. Mix with other botanicals from our collection such as Indian Almond Leaves, Banana Leaves, Almond Bark, and Guava Leaves to create a varied and natural leaf litter environment.

Also Suitable for Vivariums and Terrariums Jackfruit Leaves work equally well in vivariums and terrariums where they provide cover and humidity buffering in the leaf litter layer, and serve as a food source for isopods and springtails in bioactive setups.

Storage Store unused leaves in a cool dry location away from moisture in a sealed container or bag.
