Biological Sponge Filter

4 reviews

Price range: $6.75 through $10.00

Used in every tank in our fishroom, sponge filters provide reliable biological filtration, instant cycling capability, and a safe low current environment that fish, fry, and shrimp thrive in.

Description

Reliable biological filtration trusted by serious hobbyists for breeding tanks, rearing setups, and everyday aquarium use.

Sponge filters are one of the most versatile and reliable filtration options available, and serious hobbyists have relied on them for decades for good reason. Beneficial bacteria colonize the sponge over time, creating a self-sustaining biological filter that can be moved between tanks to instantly cycle a new setup, or left in place as backup filtration in the event of a primary filter failure. We run sponge filters in every tank in our fishroom under 100 gallons as the sole filtration, and in our larger tanks in place of air stones, where they pull double duty providing both biological filtration and water movement. The gentle flow makes them ideal for breeding tanks, fry rearing setups, betta tanks, and shrimp tanks where strong current would stress or harm inhabitants.

Size Options

Up to 10 gallon: perfect for breeding tanks, bettas, and other species that do best in low current environments.

Up to 25 gallon: an excellent addition to breeding tanks and smaller species only setups.

Up to 50 gallon: a reliable and economical filtration option for mid-sized aquariums.

Up to 75 gallon: features a wider and taller lift tube to increase water movement through the filter and create beneficial current in the tank.

Up to 130 gallon: our most powerful sponge filter, capable of handling heavily stocked rearing tanks and providing significant additional bacterial colonization in large aquariums.

How to Use Connect to an air pump with airline tubing. Adjust airflow using the air pump valve to control current strength. Rinse the sponge periodically in tank water during water changes to maintain flow without destroying beneficial bacteria.
