Description

A Classic Koi Angel With Stunning Orange Coloring

Our Deluxe Tri-Color Orange Koi Angelfish are one of the most recognizable varieties in the angelfish hobby, sometimes referred to as Classic Koi Angels. Technically classified as Blushing Gold Marbles, these fish display a minimum of 25% orange coverage on their bodies, often significantly more, alongside classic black and white marbling patterns. Each fish is unique, with orange coverage and pattern distribution varying between individuals.

Understanding the Koi Range Koi angelfish come in three distinct coverage types, all sharing the same genetics but expressing different ranges of orange coloring. Deluxe Tri-Color fall in the middle range with 25 to 75% orange coverage. High Coverage or Red Devil Koi display close to 100% orange coverage and were developed directly from this line. Panda Koi display very little to no orange coloring. Breeding Deluxe Tri-Color together will produce offspring across all three coverage types, with the majority falling into the Deluxe Tri-Color range and some producing the highly sought after High Coverage expression.

Genetics Koi angelfish carry the Gold Marble gene alongside a double dose of the Stripeless gene, expressed genetically as Gm/g S/S or Gm/Gm S/S. The Gm notation represents the Gold Marble gene while g represents the Gold gene and S represents Stripeless. As with all Koi type angelfish, offspring can vary greatly in orange coverage even from the same spawn.

The Importance of a High Carotene Diet Offering a diet rich in carotene sources will help Koi angelfish develop deeper and more vibrant orange tones over time. As juveniles these fish need time and the right nutrition to reach their full color potential. We recommend incorporating the following foods to support the best possible coloring in your Koi angelfish:

Astaxanthin A powerful natural color enhancing supplement supporting deep and vibrant orange tones.

Grand Champion RED A pellet containing astaxanthin for exceptional color enhancement.

Artemia Flake A thick meaty flake providing 400ppm astaxanthin, one of the most powerful natural color enhancing compounds available.

Color Growth Flake Contains astaxanthin, artemia, and spirulina for a well rounded color enhancing and growth supporting diet.

Fin Types Available in both Standard and Veil fin types when in stock.

Angelfish Care Guide and Other Information

Scientific NamePterophyllum scalare
TemperamentSemi-Aggressive. Angelfish can make good community fish; however, due to their semi-aggressive nature, they need to be closely monitored...and deal with if they become too aggressive. For this reason we do not recommend angelfish for beginners.
Lifespan10-15 years with proper care.
Adult SizeThe central body will reach a large dollar coin, approx 3-4 inches in diameter, excluding the fins. Depending on the fin type on how big their overall size can become. Also, angelfish will continue to slowly grow and bulk up as they age.
General Hardness8 dGH or 100 TDS. Angelfish do best in soft water, but can easily adapt to hard water. If mineralization is too high eggs may not hatch. When this happens may need to consider alternate methods if wanting to breed.
Tank Size20 Gallon High for the first angelfish; and an additional 10 gallons for each additional angel.
Group SizeAngelfish can be kept in singles or in groups. While juveniles, they do best in groups. But once they mature, they may begin to fight for territory and for their mate. To minimize squabbles, do not house 3 together as the dominant two will pick on and potentially kill the submissive one.
HabitatFreshwater
Dietary NeedsOmnivore. Angelfish need extra protein and plant sources for optimum health. Options include:
  • Gourmet Cichlid Flake or Tropical Color Flake
  • Artemia Flake - especially when raising red or deep orange varieties
  • Newly hatched Baby Brine Shrimp Eggs (BBS)
  • Golden Pearls - great alternative to hatching BBS. A great alternative to hatching BBS.
  • Sticks - any flavor. Popular options include Beefheart Sticks, Bloodworm Sticks, Silkworm Sticks, Spirulina Sticks, Very Veggie Sticks, and much more.
  • Organic Granules
  • Repashy
  • Even fresh veggies and occasional fruits. But be aware, fresh foods can quickly pollute the tank. I like to use fresh foods 1-2 days before doing water changes or maintenance to clean up
BreedingAngels can learn to parent raise their offspring if housed in their own tank 29 gallons or larger; or can pull the eggs and hatch artificially.
